Mountaineering paradise in south of Europe

Spain is one of the most mountanious countries in Europe (after Zwitserland and Austria). The average height of Spain is 620 meters over sea level. Only in the Pyrenees there are more than 200 summits above the 3.000 meters high. In Sierra Nevada, at the south of the country, there are another 24 mountains with more than 3.000 meters. Teide, the big volcano in Tenerife (Canarian Islands) is more than 3.700 m high. Next to that, Spain is crossed by many mountain ranges with many tops over the 2.000 meters, some of them very wild and rough. Just as an example, here is a short list (ordered by height) with the main mountain ranges in the country with their main summits:

  • Sierra Nevada - Mulhacén (3.482 m)Spanish mountain ranges
  • Pyrenees - Aneto (3.404 m)
  • Picos de Europa - Torrecerredo (2.648 m)
  • Sierra de Gredos - Almanzor (2.592 m)
  • Cordillera Cantábrica - Curavacas (2.520 m)
  • Sierra del Moncayo/Sistema Ibérico - Moncayo (2.316 m)
  • Sierra de Guadarrama - Peñalara (2.429 m)

Some of these mountains are very difficult to climb, but most of them have a relative easy acces to their summits. The mild and good weather in Spain makes it all a little bit easier and very pleasant, but in the winter mountaineering activities, even in the easier mountains, can be challenging. There are so many mountains that there are plenty of possibilities at all levels of difficulty.
